Photographing a young child is more than just clever props, technical skills and art. The photographer has to have a genuine love for children, tons and tons of patience and some real understanding of what makes them tick.

Echoes of Light has been constructed with children in mind, from the lift in the camera room floor and all kinds of childrens props to the miniaturization of some outdoor settings.
 

Tips for great children's portraits:

  • Be Prepared. Have your clothing selections ready (including shoes) at least the day before your session. Make sure your time before the session is rush/stress free.
  • Plan on arriving at the studio a few minutes before your scheduled appointment time. Children need time to warm up to a strange place.
  • Make certain your child is well rested, fed and healthy for their appointment. Children up to one year typically do not smile on cue. We can secure a great portrait but don't always count on that big sweet smile.
  • Bring a toy, book, or something personal the child can hold and play with; this not only adds to the comfort level of the child it makes the portrait special.
  • We have found that one or two adults in the camera room (besides Bob) works OK, more than that just adds to the confusion, also people that can laugh and play work out a lot better than people that give loud, firm directions.
  • Be ready to laugh and play with your child from behind the camera.
